In a major step toward strengthening technology education and digital skills development, the Karnataka government has approved the establishment of 50 Artificial Intelligence (AI) laboratories in government colleges across the state. The initiative is designed to expand access to emerging technologies and improve employability opportunities for students, particularly in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities and towns.
Announced as part of the Karnataka State Budget 2026–27, the program will be implemented in partnership with the Government of India's AI Mission. The initiative aims to equip students with industry-relevant skills and practical experience in rapidly growing technology domains such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Science.
The AI laboratories will provide hands-on learning opportunities through practical training programs, experimentation, innovation projects, and skill-development activities. Students will gain direct exposure to cutting-edge technologies that are increasingly becoming essential across industries including healthcare, finance, manufacturing, education, and cybersecurity.
Selected colleges will receive AI-enabled laboratory infrastructure designed to support advanced learning and research. The facilities will enable students to work on real-world AI applications, develop technical expertise, and enhance their readiness for careers in the digital economy.
The project will receive substantial financial support through the national AI Mission. Each laboratory is expected to receive funding of approximately ₹68.98 lakh over three years, while the Karnataka government has separately approved ₹10 crore for the initiative, with ₹6.29 crore allocated during the first phase of implementation.
In the first phase, the state has approved 23 educational institutions for the rollout of AI laboratories. The government believes that access to advanced technology education should not be limited to major metropolitan areas and that students from smaller cities should have equal opportunities to develop future-ready skills.
The initiative is expected to play a crucial role in bridging the technology skills gap and preparing students for careers driven by artificial intelligence and automation. As organizations increasingly adopt AI-powered solutions, demand for professionals with expertise in machine learning, data analytics, and AI technologies continues to grow worldwide.
Industry experts view the establishment of AI laboratories as a significant investment in Karnataka's future workforce. By combining practical training with academic learning, the program aims to create a strong pipeline of skilled talent capable of contributing to India's growing digital economy and innovation ecosystem.
The approval of 50 AI labs further strengthens Karnataka's position as one of India's leading technology and innovation hubs while supporting the broader national vision of expanding AI education and digital transformation across the country.
