Share
India’s electric two-wheeler market has crossed a major milestone in 2026, with registrations surpassing 15 lakh units in just the first nine months of the year.
According to industry data reported by The Economic Times, electric two-wheeler registrations reached around 15.61 lakh units between January and September 2026. This figure has already exceeded the total registrations recorded during the whole of 2025.

September Sales Also Rise

The momentum continued in September, with approximately 1.97 lakh electric two-wheelers registered during the month.
September registrations were around 7.7% higher than August, indicating continued demand for electric scooters and motorcycles in the Indian market.

Why Are Electric Two-Wheelers Growing?

Several factors are contributing to the increasing adoption of electric two-wheelers in India:
1. Lower Running Costs
Electric scooters generally have lower energy and maintenance costs compared with petrol-powered two-wheelers.
2. Growing EV Infrastructure
Charging infrastructure is expanding across Indian cities and highways, making EV ownership more practical.
3. More Choices for Buyers
Manufacturers are offering electric scooters and motorcycles across different price ranges and use cases.
4. Increasing Consumer Adoption
Consumers are increasingly considering electric vehicles for daily commuting, particularly for urban travel.

Major Companies in the Market

India's electric two-wheeler market includes several major manufacturers such as TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, Ola Electric, Ather Energy and Hero MotoCorp, along with other emerging EV manufacturers.
Competition among these companies is driving improvements in range, charging technology, performance and connected features.

What This Means for India's EV Market

Crossing 15 lakh registrations before the end of September highlights the growing role of electric two-wheelers in India's broader transition toward electric mobility.
With three months still remaining in 2026, the annual registration figure could move considerably higher if the current pace continues.
