Japan’s TIER IV to Test Autonomous Buses in Saudi Arabia Under New Government-Backed Project

Japanese autonomous-driving technology company TIER IV has secured support from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to advance autonomous-bus field operational tests in Saudi Arabia. The announcement was made on October 5, 2026, making it one of the latest developments in international autonomous-mobility technology.
Under the project, TIER IV will develop autonomous buses for deployment in Saudi Arabia and work with a European automaker to integrate its autonomous-driving system. The company will use its Autoware open-source autonomous-driving platform, along with AI models trained using local data. This is important because Saudi Arabia presents different operating conditions from Japan, including a desert climate, local road environments and right-hand traffic.
The initial field operational tests will take place in controlled environments before the project expands toward public-road testing. TIER IV will also collaborate with local transportation operators, government authorities and educational institutions to develop local expertise in autonomous mobility and STEM technologies.
The project aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, which includes a goal of making 15% of public transportation autonomous by 2030. TIER IV says the knowledge gained in Saudi Arabia could also help improve autonomous-driving technology for other international markets.
The project therefore represents more than a self-driving bus trial—it is a Japan–Saudi collaboration combining AI, open-source software, autonomous vehicles and future smart-mobility infrastructure.
