Freelance website development opportunities have fallen sharply as an increasing number of entrepreneurs turn to artificial intelligence to build their online presence independently. Recent research commissioned by Bluehost reveals that 53 percent of surveyed business owners now rely on AI website builders rather than hiring professional developers or agencies. This shift coincides with a dramatic decline in freelance programming job postings, particularly across categories like general website design, PHP, WordPress, and HTML development.
Data from the marketplace Freelancer.com indicates that website design advertisements dropped by 59 percent between the second quarter of 2024 and the third quarter of 2026. Opportunities for PHP and WordPress experienced near-identical contractions of 59 percent and 58 percent respectively, while HTML programming vacancies fell by 55 percent. Although these platform-specific metrics cannot definitively prove that automated tools are solely responsible for the downturn, the reductions vastly outpace those seen in other creative fields like graphic design, which saw a 43 percent drop.
Business owners adopting these generative tools report substantial financial and temporal windfalls. Survey participants cited average savings of $850 and roughly 32 working hours compared to traditional agency routes. Satisfaction levels among users run high, with 97 percent reporting at least moderate satisfaction with their AI-generated portals. Despite this enthusiasm, human oversight remains standard practice. Only nine percent of entrepreneurs published their sites without touching the initial output, while the vast majority manually adjusted visual elements, tweaked written content, or scrutinized subsequent modifications before letting customers see them.
