Digital banking giant Revolut has fundamentally shifted its artificial intelligence strategy, completely replacing commercial models from Anthropic with self-hosted alternatives. Speaking at recent industry conferences, Revolut Infrastructure Lead David Abitbol explained that the company initially approached enterprise AI adoption with strict financial caution due to unpredictable token expenses. Heavy internal users were previously racking up thousands of dollars in monthly bills without achieving a proportional return on investment.
By migrating workloads to self-hosted, open-weight models from China's Z.ai running on Nvidia B200 hardware, the financial institution managed to drive inference costs down to roughly thirty cents per million input and output tokens. This transition eliminated unexpected monthly billing spikes and gave developers the freedom to utilize coding assistants without constantly worrying about restrictive token caps or budget ceilings. According to company metrics shared by Abitbol, the localized infrastructure approach yielded a seventy percent boost in lead-time productivity alongside a sixty percent improvement in overall coding efficiency.
Despite the drastic reduction in direct software licensing and API fees, operating custom infrastructure introduces heavy capital expenditures. Revolut's setup relies on dozens of advanced Nvidia graphics processing units and substantial memory allocations to handle user context retention and continuous model requests. Industry observers note that while renting commercial intelligence offers immediate convenience, shifting toward proprietary self-hosted hardware setups may become the preferred economic model for large enterprises seeking predictable operating expenses.
