OpenAI Teams Up With Cathedral Startup to Boost AI Security

As cybercriminals increasingly lean on automated software to probe for network weaknesses, OpenAI is bolstering its defenses through an unexpected alliance. The artificial intelligence pioneer has partnered with Cathedral, a secretive cybersecurity startup established by a group of former Department of Government Efficiency employees. Cathedral gained widespread attention after reportedly penetrating Anthropic's private infrastructure through a bug bounty exercise, sparking intense debate across the industry regarding the boundaries of offensive security research.

Cathedral's founding team includes Gavin Kliger, Luke Farritor, Marko Elez, and Jack Stein. The startup launched earlier this year following a massive funding round backed by prominent venture firms like Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital, pushing its valuation into the billions. Despite its minimalist digital footprint and penchant for operational secrecy, the firm has quickly positioned itself as a formidable force in elite vulnerability research.

Under the new partnership, Cathedral's personnel will collaborate directly with OpenAI engineers to aggressively probe and challenge existing system protections. Alongside this collaboration, OpenAI announced it is significantly increasing payouts for critical findings discovered through its own bug bounty ecosystem. This push toward aggressive preemptive defense arrives on the heels of industry-wide alarms over widespread legacy software vulnerabilities, prompting major tech organizations to rapidly overhaul their digital architecture.
