Macronix Exits Nintendo Switch ROM Business As Physical Media Falters

Nintendo faces a significant supply chain hurdle following reports that Macronix, the primary manufacturer of flash memory inside its console game cards, is exiting the Switch business. According to MST Financial games-focused analyst David Gibson, the memory chip maker is phasing out its ROM storage operations because the product line generates insufficient revenue. While Macronix previously accounted for nearly a quarter of sales a year ago, its ROM storage business dropped to less than five percent of total sales last quarter. The company's primary focus has shifted toward eMMC and NAND storage solutions, which are rapidly outpacing the small storage format utilized by Nintendo for physical cartridges.

Although Macronix is not the sole supplier of memory for these cartridges, losing the main provider places additional strain on Nintendo's physical media pipeline. Industry analysts note that this shift will likely accelerate the industry-wide move toward digital distribution. Recent market data from Circana indicates that the vast majority of game sales are now digital, with physical software facing an uncertain decade ahead. Nintendo recently introduced a ten-dollar price premium for physical editions compared to digital counterparts on certain titles, compounding a trend where physical releases are increasingly treated as collector items or luxury goods rather than the default format.

The development also spells trouble for third-party publishers, many of whom have already transitioned to game-key cards that function primarily as physical digital rights management rather than containing actual game data. With higher capacity storage cards scaling up to 64GB and becoming costlier to produce, hardware partners and publishers alike must navigate a shrinking supplier base. As companies look toward upcoming earnings reports to clarify the hardware roadmap, the availability of fully populated physical game cartridges on shelves continues to dwindle.
