Federal authorities arrested 35-year-old Abdulrahman Alfozan on October 9 in connection with a suspected corporate espionage scheme at OpenAI. Alfozan, who had previously identified Elon Musk as his professional role model, made his first appearance in federal court on Wednesday following an investigation by the Department of Justice.

According to Department of Justice filings, the incident began on or about September 28, when a small recording device was plugged into the USB port of a television inside an OpenAI conference room. The room is regularly used for meetings discussing highly confidential technical, commercial, and strategic information, including proprietary research and product plans. OpenAI security teams discovered the device during a sweep on September 30. Security footage from the building allegedly placed Alfozan lingering near the conference room despite having no business being there, and investigators later photographed him returning on October 5 in an unsuccessful attempt to retrieve the hardware.

While OpenAI initially characterized the hardware as a sophisticated recording device, subsequent reports identified it as a low-cost hobbyist tool. Federal investigators noted that Alfozan allegedly consulted an artificial intelligence chatbot for instructions on how to build a continuous audio recorder and encrypt an SD card. When OpenAI security personnel later searched his bag, they reportedly uncovered a second recording device similar to the one recovered from the conference room.

The arrest arrives amid broader scrutiny regarding financial ties between Silicon Valley artificial intelligence firms and Middle Eastern investors, given Alfozan's background as a Saudi national working in the tech sector. While companies like Anthropic and OpenAI have maintained cautious stances regarding foreign state investments, other high-profile AI ventures have previously accepted capital from the region. Alfozan remains entangled in federal legal proceedings as authorities continue to evaluate the implications of the security breach.
