The repair experts at iFixit have completed a comprehensive teardown of Apple's newly released foldable device, awarding it a 5 out of 10 repairability score. While this figure marks a modest milestone as the highest mark the organization has ever assigned to a folding phone, the examination revealed a mix of engineering triumphs and persistent hardware vulnerabilities.
During the examination, technicians found that the outer screen and dual battery cell units are relatively straightforward to remove, offering a welcome departure from the notoriously difficult internal layouts of rival hardware. Additionally, the outer trim detached cleanly during the process, avoiding the damage seen in competing models. Apple also managed to mask the main display crease effectively through a combination of precise pixel arrangements and a matte nano-texture finish.
Despite these improvements, the teardown exposed ongoing industry hurdles regarding dust intrusion and structural stress. When testing with ultraviolet-glowing dust, particles successfully infiltrated the hinge mechanism, causing audible crunching despite an IP68 dust and water resistance rating. Furthermore, investigators noted that early reports of cracked screens might stem from pressure exerted by the main display crease against the central hinge support bar, pointing to complex and expensive hurdles for anyone needing an inner screen or hinge replacement.
