A specialized team of US Marines has been redirected to the Baltic Sea to help NATO monitor vulnerable undersea cables and pipelines. Around four dozen reconnaissance and intelligence personnel from the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion and the II Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group are operating alongside Finland's Coastal Brigade as part of NATO's Enhanced Vigilance Activity Baltic Sentry.

Rather than providing traditional combat firepower, the deployment focuses entirely on surveillance and reconnaissance. The Marines are utilizing small uncrewed aerial systems and advanced littoral sensors to stream real-time data directly into NATO's shared common operational picture. This mission follows a similar deployment in early 2025 and falls under the operational leadership of European allies, with the Marine Corps acting strictly in a supportive, enabling capacity.

The heightened focus on Baltic security stems from a series of suspicious incidents involving severed fiber-optic and power cables across the region, alongside documented tracking of critical infrastructure routes by foreign vessels. While regional tensions remain high and maritime security operations continue to evolve, the current US deployment aims to reinforce European defense capabilities and deter hybrid threats in the Baltic littoral.
