Electronic Arts shuttered BioWare last month, but an upcoming documentary will trace the studio's trajectory from its origins on the Alberta prairies to its final days. Titled Massive Effect: The BioWare Story, the film is scheduled to premiere next year after being commissioned by Canada's Super Channel. Production on the project actually began two years prior to the studio's closure, giving the film crew unexpected access to the developer's final act.

Producer Shane Fennessey noted on social media that the documentary captures how a group of underdogs built a beloved gaming institution, as told directly by the people who worked there. The project explores BioWare's 31-year history through interviews with founders Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip. Other notable figures featured in the film include director Casey Hudson, voice actor Jennifer Hale, and former EA CEO John Riccitiello, alongside various developers and industry personalities.

The closure of BioWare followed underwhelming sales for its recent titles and a workforce that had dwindled to roughly 50 employees. EA opted against funding the early stages of the next Mass Effect game, shifting resources instead toward an unannounced Star Wars Battlefront 3 project. Meanwhile, the documentary team has launched a website allowing fans to submit cosplay, photographs, fan art, and other personal memories to potentially be included in the film as a tribute to the studio's legacy.
