Amazon has unveiled a completely redesigned Kindle family, refreshing its popular e-reader lineup with new display technology, thinner designs and a new accessory designed to make hands-free reading easier. The updated range includes the standard Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft, with Amazon introducing a new flush-front display architecture across the family.
The redesigned 6-inch Kindle is positioned as Amazon’s most pocket-friendly Kindle yet. It comes with 16GB of storage, up to six weeks of battery life and book-opening speeds that Amazon says are up to 30% faster than the previous generation. The base model starts at $149.99, while a premium aluminum version with 32GB storage costs $189.99.
The new Kindle Paperwhite is thinner and lighter, offers a high-contrast display, adjustable warm lighting and up to 12 weeks of battery life. It starts at $199.99, while the Signature Edition with 32GB storage is priced at $249.99.
Amazon has also redesigned the Kindle Colorsoft, bringing paper-like color reproduction and edge-to-edge color to the lineup. It starts at $289.99, with a $319.99 Signature Edition.
Perhaps the most unusual new accessory is Kindle Click, a compact Bluetooth remote priced at $34.99. It lets users turn pages without touching the Kindle, making it useful while reading in bed, exercising or travelling. Amazon says the new Kindle devices have been designed around a more immersive, distraction-free reading experience.
