The season one finale of Lanterns, the DC Studios HBO television series, departed sharply from conventional superhero media tropes. Instead of concluding with a massive CGI battle or a final showdown against a primary villain, the episode favored a quiet, contemplative tone filled with internal moral reckonings and heavy dialogue. Amidst this introspective narrative, a startling revelation emerged regarding whether and how the mechanical Manhunters can reproduce, prompting series co-creator Chris Mundy to shed light on the creative choice.

In the fifth episode, titled Lights Out, character Zoe utilized Manhunter technology to regenerate skin for John Stewart after a severe car crash. Later in the eighth episode, Dirt and Stars, viewers learned that Zoe had previously used that exact machinery years prior to regrow Sheriff Kerry Kane's finger. A malfunction during the procedure caused the machine to inadvertently impregnate Kerry, resulting in the birth of her son, Noah, as a Manhunter. Because Kerry herself never fully grasped the mechanics of the event, the plot point left audiences questioning the true reproductive capabilities of these genocidal robots created by the Guardians of the Universe.

Addressing the ambiguity in an interview, Mundy explained that the technology's capacity to restore human tissue and organs provided the baseline for the storyline. Describing Noah's birth as a mishap born from uncharted territory, the co-creator confirmed that reproduction is theoretically possible under extreme circumstances. When pressed about whether Zoe engineered the birth intentionally, Mundy clarified that the event was accidental, though writers envisioned that Zoe attempted and failed to replicate the feat afterward. Even though the character never managed to recreate the phenomenon, the revelation leaves plenty of narrative ground to cover as the series moves forward.
