Ledger Unveils Phone-Like Crypto Device Amid Ongoing Supply Chain Scrutiny

Crypto hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger is pressing forward with a major product announcement despite dealing with a severe supply chain attack tied to millions of dollars in stolen funds. On-chain analytics firm Bitquery has linked the security breach to $102 million taken from 324 wallets, though Ledger has not officially confirmed that figure. Amid this growing scrutiny, the company introduced the Ledger Atom, a specialized hardware device that functions similarly to a traditional Android phone while incorporating heavy security alterations.

Scheduled to start shipping next summer, the Ledger Atom comes equipped with a secure chip controlling the screen, a physical privacy switch, and built-in controls for AI agents. The device features a 6.77-inch AMOLED 60Hz display, a Qualcomm Dragonwing chip, a 50MP rear camera, a 4,000mAh user-replaceable battery, and a fingerprint sensor. It connects exclusively to 4G and 5G networks via an eSIM for data, meaning it cannot handle standard phone calls, SMS messaging, or emergency services. Ledger executives emphasized that the device is not meant to replace a standard smartphone, but rather to act as a secure vault for daily applications and transactions.

The timing of the Atom launch follows intense scrutiny over compromised Ledger hardware reaching customers. Recent reports revealed that hidden implants in certain devices read user recovery phrases during setup and transmitted them via cellular connections. Ledger subsequently asked distributors in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong to halt sales, while retailers in Europe pulled inventory. Ledger states that the new Atom includes robust anti-tampering architecture, featuring a core protection enclosure designed to detect physical intrusion, unauthorized screen removal, and tampering attempts even when the device is powered off.
