British small and medium enterprises are aggressively ramping up their artificial intelligence investments, marking a sharp shift in how lean teams operate. According to recent research from small business credit card provider Capital on Tap, AI adoption among UK SMEs jumped from just 1.1 percent in 2023 to 12.8 percent. Companies are committing an average quarterly spend of 75.60 pounds per business toward these digital capabilities, allowing small teams to handle workloads previously reserved for entire departments.
Market preferences have taken an unexpected turn regarding specific platform choices. Anthropic has captured the lead among British firms, commanding over 54 percent of total AI spending through Claude and related tools. Meanwhile, OpenAI's ChatGPT secured second place with 27.3 percent of the market share. Additional platform adoption from services like Perplexity, Replit, and Lovable points to a strong software development contingent utilizing the funds, though the publishing sector currently leads overall adoption rates at 26 percent.
This rapid spending spree has also exposed a distinct pattern of software duplication across smaller organizations. Data shows that more than 28 percent of these businesses actively subscribe to two or more competing AI platforms, frequently cycling through trials and subscriptions within a single quarter. Industry experts emphasize that while lean teams can automate extensive research, marketing, and bookkeeping functions, business leaders must carefully audit their software stack to eliminate redundant subscriptions and safeguard sensitive data.
