Smart Ways to Extend Your Apple AirTag Battery Life

Apple's AirTag has become an essential accessory for travelers and anyone prone to losing their keys or luggage. One of the main advantages of the location tracker is that users never have to worry about recharging a built-in power cell. Instead, the device runs on a standard CR2032 coin-cell battery, a three-volt lithium battery commonly used in watches and car key fobs. Apple officially rates these batteries to last for more than a year before requiring a replacement.

However, real-world usage often tells a different story. Depending on how frequently the tracking features are called upon, an AirTag battery can deplete in just a few months. When power gets critically low, the device begins restricting certain capabilities, such as disabling precision finding and silencing audio alerts, to conserve remaining energy. Users can easily monitor power levels by opening the Find My application on an Apple device and navigating to the Items tab.

Several usage habits accelerate power consumption. Continuously playing audio alerts forces the built-in speaker to fire repeatedly, while frequent use of precision finding engages the Ultra Wideband chip for real-time communication with an iPhone or Apple Watch, draining the battery faster. Additionally, trackers placed on items that are constantly moving require more frequent location pings, and extreme temperatures outside of the minus four to one hundred and forty degrees Fahrenheit operating range can negatively impact performance.

Replacing the battery requires a simple press and twist of the steel underside cover to remove the old cell and insert a new one with the positive side facing upward. Choosing a reliable, well-known brand rather than generic alternatives ensures optimal charge retention. Avoiding unnecessary location refreshes and limiting constant app checks will help the coin-cell battery reach its maximum potential lifespan.
