Peter Steinberger, the creator of the OpenClaw AI agent platform, recently made headlines by admitting to burning through an estimated $10 million in tokens in a single month. Speaking at the Cloudflare Connect 2026 conference in San Francisco, Steinberger discussed the staggering resource demands of next-generation personal AI agents with Cloudflare CTO Dane Knecht.
During their conversation on cloud infrastructure and AI workloads, Knecht pointed out that Steinberger operated with a virtually unlimited token budget courtesy of OpenAI's backers. While Steinberger's casual disclosure shed light on the immense financial backing powering current AI research, it also prompted scrutiny over operational efficiency and cost management among industry observers.
Beyond the massive expenditure, Steinberger emphasized that modern infrastructure has yet to fully catch up with the demands of continuous cloud-based computing. He also outlined a future where users will rely on multiple specialized AI agents, proposing a dual-agent system where one executes tasks and a second reviews and grants permissions to ensure safety and build user trust.
