OpenAI has released details regarding three new scientific breakthroughs produced by its internal AI systems. The latest update includes claims involving the Exponential Time Hypothesis, the local smoothing conjecture linked to the Kakeya conjecture, and certain interacting quantum field theories in four dimensions, such as Quantum Chromodynamics. These outputs follow an earlier batch of mathematical results published on GitHub earlier this month.
Rather than seeking direct academic credit, OpenAI insists that the model-generated texts function primarily as raw research data. According to the company, the responsibility falls on the broader math and physics communities to convert these raw outputs into verified scientific understanding. To manage this transition, OpenAI has contacted external specialists to act as shepherds. These individuals are tasked with organizing groups to process the AI-generated material, despite acknowledgment from OpenAI that this initial selection process creates information asymmetries.
Verification of these findings has relied heavily on Lean, a proof assistant tool designed to minimize manual checking. However, reliance on Lean has previously sparked debate, with human researchers raising concerns that earlier solutions verified weaker assertions than initially claimed. For the latest physics discoveries, the working group has chosen to withhold the raw AI-produced artifacts temporarily, opting instead to write up the findings themselves before public release.
