Valve is altering its Steam release guidelines to clear a heavy backlog of title approvals. The delay stems from an unprecedented influx of new games reaching the platform, a significant portion of which are created using artificial intelligence. Review times have stretched from the standard three to five days up to twelve business days, causing indie developers to miss launch targets by weeks and lose critical momentum.

The surge in submissions spiked noticeably in September and October. Industry data shows that nearly half of the games released on Steam in October disclosed AI-generated content, placing immense strain on Valve's review infrastructure. Developers have reported missed marketing windows and frustrated player communities as a direct result of these administrative bottlenecks.

To combat the slowdown, Valve has introduced stricter pre-submission requirements designed to minimize the need for multiple manual reviews. Creators must now test their games through Steam for at least five minutes to verify platform compatibility, confirm redistributables like DirectX and Visual C++, check achievement setups, configure Steam Cloud save paths, and accurately categorize screenshots.

Valve acknowledged the frustration felt by creators in a recent community post, noting that further updates to the review pipeline are currently in development. While the platform holder did not explicitly name automated tools as the primary culprit, the timing coincides directly with a broader industry debate regarding low-effort software clogging digital storefronts.
