Netflix continues to expand its animated catalog with Bass X Machina, a distinct sci-fi series that reimagines post-Civil War America through a steampunk lens. Created by LeSean Thomas and animated by Studio Mir and Studio IAM, the series follows the historical figure Bass Reeves, voiced by Brian Tyree Henry, as a bounty hunter navigating a technologically altered frontier. After being offered a chance to become a U.S. Marshal, Reeves embarks on a dangerous final mission to locate a missing inventor while accompanied by an aspiring young inventor named Dana Starr, voiced by Tati Gabrielle.

Unlike previous attempts to blend historical Black figures with speculative fiction, the series grounds its supernatural elements in the harsh realities of its alternate timeline. Reeves sports a cybernetic arm equipped with weaponry, the dark result of forced technological experimentation he managed to escape. This background informs his pragmatic worldview, contrasting sharply with Dana's pacifism and technological ingenuity. Along the way, the duo encounters outlaws, hulking automatons, and a troupe of Native American elemental benders also tracking the missing target.

The production leans heavily into an authentic cultural framework, featuring executive producers Thomas and Henry alongside a voice cast that includes Janelle Monáe, who also contributes an uncensored opening theme song. Studio Mir maintains its reputation for dynamic action choreography, ensuring that shootouts and mechanical confrontations retain physical weight and momentum without overwhelming the central character drama.

By resisting the urge to cram too many concepts into its runtime, the series establishes a sprawling mythos that allows the human struggles of its protagonist to remain front and center. Bass X Machina sets a new benchmark for original genre animation on streaming platforms, pairing high-concept world-building with confident storytelling.
