Maya Hawke is stepping into the multiverse. The Stranger Things and The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping actor is the first major name attached to star in the upcoming Magic: The Gathering feature film. Developed through a collaboration between Legendary and Hasbro, the project is being directed and co-written by Matt Johnson. While plot details remain under wraps and character descriptions are heavily guarded, industry reports indicate that Hawke was given the first offer to join the production and will anchor a central role in what is planned as an ensemble piece.
This cinematic adaptation represents the latest expansion for the iconic trading card game, which first launched in 1993 and has since evolved into a massive multi-platform franchise. Alongside the feature film, producers are developing a companion television series designed to weave into the same overarching universe. The Wizards of the Coast property, managed under Hasbro, currently boasts an active base of more than 50 million players worldwide through physical cards, digital iterations, novels, and high-profile intellectual property crossovers.
In recent years, Magic: The Gathering has aggressively expanded its cultural footprint by crossing over with major entertainment franchises, ranging from The Lord of the Rings and Final Fantasy to Marvel and Dungeons and Dragons. Although a definitive release date and production schedule have not yet been announced, the casting of Hawke signals a major step forward for the long-gestating project as it moves out of development.
