The Omdia Report: Agentic AI is Fracturing the Cloud Stack
Share
The newly published Global AI Cloud Stack 2026 report by Omdia confirms a massive architectural earthquake happening in enterprise computing. For the last 15 years, the tech industry has relied on a rigid, three-tiered cloud model: Infrastructure (IaaS), Platforms (PaaS), and Software (SaaS). The rise of "Agentic AI" is actively destroying these boundaries, forcing cloud giants like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud to completely redesign their data centers.

The Collapse of SaaS and Rise of MaaS

Traditionally, a company buys SaaS (like Salesforce or Workday) and humans click buttons in a graphical interface to make things happen. Agentic AI doesn't need graphical interfaces. These autonomous agents bypass the software layer entirely to interact directly with databases and compute layers via APIs.
  • Model-as-a-Service (MaaS): The new paradigm is MaaS. Cloud providers are pivoting from hosting web apps to renting out secure, containerized foundational models. Enterprises are deploying autonomous agents that live directly inside the cloud fabric, making their own decisions about when to spin up server resources or query databases without human intervention.

The Interoperability and Security Nightmare

The Omdia report highlights a massive looming crisis: Agentic Interoperability.
  • The Problem: What happens when an enterprise's supply chain AI agent (running on AWS) needs to negotiate a contract with a supplier’s legal AI agent (running on Azure)? Currently, there is no standardized protocol for cross-cloud agentic communication.
  • Zero-Trust Identity for Algorithms: Security teams are scrambling because traditional identity management relies on human passwords and two-factor authentication. IT departments are now being forced to issue cryptographic identities to the AI agents themselves, tracking exactly what internal data an autonomous script has access to as it moves across cloud environments.
