Application Security Testing: SAST, DAST, and Shifting Left on Security
Share
As cyber threats continue to evolve, organizations must prioritize application security throughout the software development lifecycle (SDLC). Application Security Testing (AST) helps identify vulnerabilities before attackers can exploit them. Two of the most widely used approaches are Static Application Security Testing (SAST) and Dynamic Application Security Testing (DAST).
SAST analyzes an application's source code, bytecode, or binaries without executing the program. It helps developers detect security flaws early in development, such as insecure coding practices, SQL injection risks, and authentication weaknesses. Because it is performed during coding, SAST enables faster remediation and reduces the cost of fixing vulnerabilities.
DAST, on the other hand, tests a running application from the outside, simulating real-world attacks. It identifies runtime vulnerabilities, configuration issues, and security gaps that may not be visible through code analysis alone. DAST is particularly useful during testing and pre-production stages to evaluate how an application behaves under attack scenarios.
Modern organizations are increasingly adopting a "Shift Left" security strategy, which integrates security testing earlier in the development process rather than waiting until the final testing phase. By embedding security checks into planning, coding, building, and testing stages, teams can identify and resolve issues sooner, improve collaboration between developers and security teams, and deliver more secure applications.
Combining SAST, DAST, and a Shift Left approach creates a comprehensive security framework that reduces risks, improves compliance, and strengthens overall software quality. In today's threat landscape, proactive security is no longer optional—it's a critical part of building resilient and trustworthy applications.
