iPhone 18 Pro Can Help Verify If a Photo Is Authentic With Apple’s New Reference Image Feature

Apple has introduced a new Apple Reference Image feature on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The feature is designed to help users verify the source of a photograph and check whether an image has been edited after it was captured.

How Apple Reference Image Works
Apple Reference Image is an opt-in camera mode that works with the Main camera on the iPhone 18 Pro models. When Reference mode is used, the camera captures signed data from the sensor at the time the photo is taken.
This data is then used to create an unalterable reference image, which Apple compares to a digital negative. The reference image can be viewed alongside the normal photo in the Photos app, allowing users to compare the two and determine whether edits have been made.
Designed for the Era of AI-Edited Images
The feature comes at a time when AI tools make it increasingly easy to create or modify realistic images. Apple says Reference Image can help users establish that a photo came from an iPhone camera and compare the original sensor data with another version of the image.
Apple is also preparing support for SynthID, a technology that can help identify images generated or edited with AI. Apple says SynthID support will arrive through a software update later this year.

Reference Image Is Optional
Apple Reference Image is off by default, and users can choose whether to enable it. On supported iPhone 18 Pro models, users can enable Reference mode from:
Settings → Camera → Reference Image → Add Reference Mode
After setting it up, users can select Reference mode from the Camera app when they want to capture a photo with additional verification data.

Privacy and Availability
Apple says the feature is designed with privacy in mind. When a user asks Apple to authenticate a photo, certain photo metadata and device information are processed through Private Cloud Compute. Apple says it cannot access the raw photograph during authentication.
Apple Reference Image is currently limited to the Main camera and is not available in every country or region. Availability can therefore vary depending on where the iPhone is being used.
With Apple Reference Image, the iPhone 18 Pro adds a new layer of photo provenance that could be useful for photographers, journalists, creators and anyone who needs additional information about where a photograph came from.
