Apple Tightens macOS Security to Limit AI Agents’ Access to Mac Data

Apple is introducing new security controls in macOS designed to give users more control over applications that request extensive access to data stored on a Mac.
The change focuses on the Full Disk Access permission, which can allow an application to access a large amount of information stored on the computer.
Apple says the new controls are particularly important as increasingly capable AI agents begin interacting with computers and performing tasks on behalf of users.
WHAT IS FULL DISK ACCESS?
Full Disk Access is a macOS privacy permission that allows an approved application to access files and information that would otherwise be protected by the operating system.
Depending on the permissions granted, an application can potentially access sensitive information stored across different parts of a Mac.
Apple is now making the process of granting this level of access more explicit.
WHY IS APPLE CHANGING THE SYSTEM?
AI agents are becoming capable of performing more complex tasks on computers, including interacting with files, applications and other system resources.
While these capabilities can make AI assistants more useful, they also create additional security risks if an agent or the application running it receives more access than the user intended.
Apple's updated approach is designed to make users take clearer and more deliberate action before granting such extensive permissions.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR AI AGENTS?
AI agents can potentially perform tasks that traditional applications could not handle automatically.
However, giving an AI-powered application broad access to personal files, messages, browsing data or other sensitive information can increase the consequences of mistakes or unintended actions.
Apple's changes are therefore aimed at adding another layer of protection around powerful permissions.
WHY THIS MATTERS
The move highlights a growing challenge for the technology industry: AI agents need deeper access to computers to be useful, but that same access can create significant privacy and cybersecurity risks.
As AI assistants become more autonomous, operating-system security controls may increasingly need to distinguish between ordinary applications and software capable of independently performing complex actions.
Apple's changes show how operating-system security is evolving alongside the rapid growth of AI agents.
