IBM has announced the expansion of its long-running research collaborations with IIT Bombay and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to accelerate work in agentic AI, sovereign AI, multimodal systems, quantum computing and next-generation computing.

The collaboration with IIT Bombay will focus on sovereign and Indic language models, with the goal of improving AI capabilities for Indian languages through model adaptation and optimization. Researchers will also work on multimodal AI systems, AI-assisted software engineering, programming education and knowledge retrieval.

IBM and IISc will focus on agentic AI systems, AI applications for scientific and industrial use cases, and quantum computing algorithms. One area of research involves developing lightweight time-series foundation models based on IBM's Granite model family for energy forecasting, anomaly detection and optimization.

The IISc collaboration will also explore quantum-centric supercomputing, including workflows that combine quantum and high-performance computing technologies.
IBM said the expanded collaborations are intended to combine academic research with practical technologies that can support enterprises, developers and scientific research in India.
The partnerships build on IBM's existing collaborations with IIT Bombay dating back to 2018 and IISc dating back to 2021.
