India's semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem is gaining another important hardware component as Micronex Technology plans to establish a semiconductor lead-frame manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat. The development was reported on October 5, 2026, with the project being connected to Gujarat's rapidly expanding semiconductor manufacturing and packaging ecosystem.
Micronex has partnered with Kaynes Semicon through a memorandum of understanding to develop the proposed facility. The project focuses on manufacturing lead frames, which are small but critical metal structures used during semiconductor packaging. A lead frame provides mechanical support to a semiconductor die and creates the electrical connections between the chip and the package's external terminals.
The development is particularly significant because semiconductor manufacturing is not limited to producing silicon wafers and processors. Packaging materials, testing equipment and other supporting components form an essential part of the semiconductor supply chain. By producing lead frames domestically, India could reduce its dependence on imported packaging components while creating a local supplier base for semiconductor assembly and testing companies.
Micronex says its planned facility will use high-speed progressive stamping along with in-house silver-spot and nickel-plating capabilities, with an initial target capacity of around 500 million lead frames annually. The company is also looking to participate in India's Semicon 2.0 programme.
The Sanand project adds another piece to India's growing semiconductor hardware ecosystem and could help strengthen the country's long-term ambitions in chip manufacturing, packaging and electronics production.
