Apple has confirmed a cellular connectivity issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T's network in the United States. Affected devices can lose cellular service and may be unable to make calls, send text messages or use mobile data, with some phones showing an “SOS” indicator instead of a normal network connection.
Apple has released iOS 27.0.1 along with an AT&T carrier-settings update designed to help prevent the issue from affecting additional devices. Apple is strongly encouraging iPhone 18 Pro Max users to install the latest software. The carrier update is also being rolled out to affected devices automatically.
However, there is an important catch. The software updates cannot restore cellular service on an iPhone that has already been affected. Apple says those devices require a hardware replacement, and affected customers should contact Apple Support or AT&T or visit an Apple Store or AT&T location.
Apple has not publicly disclosed the exact technical cause of the problem. The company has also said that it has only observed the issue with iPhone 18 Pro Max devices on AT&T's US network, with no other iPhone models or carriers currently known to be affected.
The issue is therefore not being reported as a global iPhone 18 Pro Max problem. For users outside the US, particularly in India, there is currently no indication from the available reports that Indian networks are affected.
Apple's response highlights the importance of keeping newly launched smartphones updated, while the replacement requirement suggests that the affected devices may have a problem that cannot be corrected through software once the cellular failure has occurred.
