Delhi Turns to AI to Monitor Pollution in Real Time Across 700+ Construction Sites

Delhi has launched a new Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) under the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to monitor pollution sources across the city in real time. The centre, inaugurated on October 1, is designed to combine technology-driven monitoring with faster field-level enforcement as Delhi prepares for the winter pollution season.
One of the centre’s major functions is the live monitoring of more than 700 construction sites covering areas larger than 500 square metres. AI-enabled CCTV systems can monitor these locations, with authorities alerted when pollution indicators such as PM10 levels rise.
The system also brings together real-time AQI information, historical pollution data, CCTV feeds and GPS tracking of mechanical road-sweeping machines. This allows officials to identify pollution hotspots and track whether cleaning operations are being carried out in designated areas.
Delhi’s pollution-control teams will also use connected body cameras during field inspections, allowing activities to be monitored from the command centre. Cameras will additionally help detect incidents such as open waste and biomass burning.
The ICCC is intended to follow a “Detect, Analyse, Act, Verify” approach. Once technology identifies a potential pollution hotspot or violation, the information can be passed to the relevant department for field action and subsequent verification.
With Delhi entering another challenging winter pollution season, the new centre represents an effort to use AI, connected cameras, GPS and live environmental data not simply to observe pollution, but to connect detection directly with enforcement.
