OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Monetization With New Visual Ad Formats

OpenAI is pushing deeper into monetization by expanding the types of advertisements displayed within ChatGPT. The company announced plans to roll out a new visual ad format, bringing image-based sponsored content directly into the chatbot interface alongside generated outputs. These carousel-style slots will display products and services, aiming to give brands fresh avenues for visual storytelling.

This shift follows OpenAI's initial introduction of text-based sponsored spots back in February, which appeared at the end of model responses alongside related links. The newly unveiled visual placements will initially accompany images generated within ChatGPT. However, industry observers expect these sponsored digital billboards to spread across broader areas of the platform as the company pursues aggressive revenue growth.

While OpenAI reported hitting $1 billion in annualized ad revenue last August, that metric relies on short-term projections and early adopter enthusiasm. Brand returns on initial ChatGPT placements have yielded mixed results thus far. To bypass the new marketing push entirely, users can subscribe to paid tiers like ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Enterprise, which remain completely excluded from the advertising rollout.
