Horror auteur Mike Flanagan is officially leaving a massive footprint across the genre landscape. Aside from tackling new iterations of Carrie and The Exorcist, Flanagan conceptualized and penned the initial script for DC's upcoming feature, Clayface. DC Studios co-head James Gunn initially hesitated on greenlighting the project, but the strength of Flanagan's script quickly changed his mind. Set for a theatrical release on October 23, the production shifts focus away from traditional capes and cowls to deliver a gritty story rooted in revenge and physical transformation.
While earlier promotional material kept the film's darker edges hidden, a newly released behind-the-scenes video leans heavily into the grotesque special effects driving the narrative. The project operates independently of Batman, positioning the iconic villain as the central figure in a dedicated body horror feature. Directed by James Watkins from a screenplay crafted by Flanagan and Hossein Amini, the film stars Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan.
For DC Studios, Clayface represents a calculated test of audience appetite for genre experimentation. Although the financial exposure remains lower than tentpole projects like Superman, the film establishes a blueprint for risk-taking within the broader cinematic universe. A strong box office performance could clear the path for more unconventional adaptations, while a misfire might limit similar creative departures in the future. Tickets for the October 23 release are currently on sale.
