An Ohio political blogger known for his irreverent coverage of state politics has been found guilty of telecommunications harassment following a legal battle sparked by an explicit cartoon meme. D.J. Byrnes, who operates under the moniker The Rooster and commands a substantial following on social media, sent a series of text messages to Republican state Sen. Jerry Cirino in May. The messages included critical political commentary alongside a graphic, fully nude depiction of the cartoon character Shrek engaged in an act of masturbation.
The digital confrontation followed a history of political friction between the two figures. Byrnes had repeatedly targeted Cirino in his reporting, later taunting the lawmaker via text after Cirino dropped out of a race to become Ohio Senate president. Shortly after receiving the messages, Cirino filed a harassment complaint with local police, describing the image as pornographic and unwelcome. Byrnes was subsequently arrested at the Ohio Statehouse and spent nearly a day in custody before posting bond.
The case quickly drew scrutiny from free speech advocates, including the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, which argued that the messages constituted protected political mockery rather than unlawful obscenity. Despite the defense's position, a jury ultimately found Byrnes guilty of a misdemeanor charge. Judge Michael Cicconetti ordered the blogger to pay a $200 fine and cover court costs, while the conviction continues to fuel broader debates regarding the legal boundaries of digital political speech and satire directed at elected officials.
