Wizards of the Coast is continuing its Universes Beyond card lineup with a deeper dive into the Marvel universe, slated for release on April 9, 2027. Titled Darkhold Destiny, the upcoming expansion introduces several key adjustments to the standard crossover formula by focusing on an original narrative developed entirely by the Wizards of the Coast narrative team. Rather than simply pitting legendary creatures against one another, the set follows characters as they traverse multiple dimensions to confront Hela and Dormammu, who have joined forces to exploit the Darkhold across the multiverse.

Magic-aligned heroes such as Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, and Brother Voodoo will anchor the gameplay, joined by an entirely new character created specifically for this release. To expand the reach of this fresh face, writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly are penning a comic adaptation of the Darkhold storyline. The comic is scheduled for a digital debut in February 2027 ahead of the physical launch, with plans for the new character to potentially appear in other storytelling mediums depending on audience reception.

From a mechanical perspective, head designer Mark Rosewater confirmed that Darkhold Destiny will fully support all two-color combinations native to Magic: The Gathering. Senior design and creative vice president Aaron Forsyth noted that this design choice enables what could be the most complex Universes Beyond product released to date, tailored specifically for seasoned players.

As Wizards of the Coast builds toward the April 2027 release date, the studio aims to blend traditional card game mechanics with expansive comic storytelling. Whether this intricate approach shifts public perception of massive IP crossovers remains to be seen, but the structured rollout ensures fans will experience the narrative across both tabletop play and printed pages.
