Foldable Phone Users Hit With Outgoing Call Bug on Android Auto

Owners of foldable smartphones running Android Auto are encountering a frustrating hardware-software bug that prevents them from placing outgoing calls while their devices are closed. Community forums across Reddit, Google, and Motorola have filled with user complaints detailing how outbound calling functions break down the moment a foldable phone is shut. Interestingly, incoming calls continue to route and connect without any interruption.

Early troubleshooting and user reports suggest that Google's Gemini assistant may be triggering the calling quandary. Several affected individuals noted that the glitch manifested shortly after they began using Gemini, with prompts occasionally demanding that the user "flip open to continue." Some users discovered a temporary workaround months prior by reverting from Gemini back to the legacy Google Assistant, though that option has diminished since Google officially phased out Google Assistant for eligible devices.

The issue appears concentrated among specific hardware, with owners of Motorola Razr Ultra models—particularly the 60 and 70 iterations running Android 16—and select Samsung Galaxy Z Flip units speaking out online. Both Google and Motorola representatives have reportedly taken notice of the forum threads and are actively collecting diagnostic data from impacted consumers. Until an official software patch rolls out, users are left with few viable options other than physically opening their foldable devices to make phone calls.
