Amazon Web Services has detailed plans for a massive 36-building data center campus spanning 1,100 acres across Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Known as the Homer City Energy Campus, the development will sit across six distinct sites in Center and Blacklick townships, roughly 50 miles east of Pittsburgh. The multi-phase project aims to significantly expand the cloud provider's regional computing infrastructure while transforming a former industrial plot.

The massive complex will rely primarily on a new 4.5 gigawatt natural gas generation facility developed alongside the project by Homer City Redevelopment. While the majority of the electricity generated will power the AWS facilities, more than one gigawatt is expected to feed back into Pennsylvania's broader electrical grid. Knighthead Capital Management is providing financial backing for the expansive infrastructure effort, which takes over land previously occupied by Pennsylvania's largest coal-fired power station until its closure in 2023.

Each of the 36 planned structures will feature two floors, reach heights of 70 feet, and encompass roughly 225,000 square feet. The campus footprint will also incorporate office spaces, storage facilities, electrical substations, security infrastructure, and additional generation equipment. Construction is scheduled to roll out across four distinct stages beginning in December 2026, with final completion targeted for June 2036.

AWS anticipates the development will create between 1,500 and 2,000 jobs, bringing average annual salaries ranging from $80,000 to $100,000 to the local workforce. Furthermore, the company has committed to a community benefits agreement designed to address local impacts, aligning with Amazon's broader $20 billion investment strategy across multiple data center initiatives in Pennsylvania.
