Meta Pivots From Metaverse Losses to AI Frontier With Muse Model

Meta has finally shifted its multi-billion-dollar focus from the struggling metaverse toward the generative artificial intelligence landscape. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg stated that the company's new Muse Wonder AI model operates at the absolute frontier of current AI capabilities, enabling sophisticated behaviors that required extensive compute investments and rigorous scientific research.

The Muse application has quickly gained traction since its early September debut, climbing to the top spot on Human Security's list of agent-based traffic sources and accounting for a massive 72 percent of total traffic. Wall Street analysts at Citigroup have responded with bullish projections, estimating the product could pull in $27 billion in annual revenue by 2030 through subscriptions and transactions, independent of advertising.

This rapid ascent has not arrived without substantial financial and operational baggage. Meta previously burned over $83 billion trying to popularize the metaverse since 2021, and current infrastructure expenses dwarf those historical losses. The tech giant projected it will spend at least $600 billion on data center infrastructure and associated jobs by the end of 2028, sparking questions about whether the aggressive spending pace could strain debt investors.

Security and privacy concerns also trail the launch. Reports indicate that Meta discovered serious security flaws just prior to rollout, including vulnerabilities that could have permitted malicious users to escape the system sandbox and breach sensitive internal databases. Despite these hurdles and a legacy of privacy scandals, Zuckerberg remains dismissive of calls from industry peers to slow down AI development, positioning Muse as a consumer-focused personal assistant platform rather than an enterprise automation tool.
