Greta Gerwig is finally bringing C.S. Lewis back to the screen with Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, marking a major milestone for Netflix as the streaming giant attempts to launch a massive new fantasy franchise. The prequel is based on the sixth book in the literary series and shifts the setting to the 1950s, a notable departure from the early 1900s timeline of the original text. At the heart of the narrative is the creation of Narnia by Aslan, voiced by Meryl Streep, drawing conceptual inspiration from British rock and roll.
The story follows two real-world children, Digory Kirke played by David McKenna and Polly Plummer played by Beatrice Campbell, who stumble into the magical realm by accident. Their journey places them directly in the path of Aslan and Jadis, the future White Queen portrayed by Emma Mackey. The expansive cast also features Carey Mulligan, Susan Wokoma, and Denise Gough, anchoring the ambitious production.
Netflix is breaking from its traditional streaming-first model to give the film a theatrical and IMAX-heavy release on February 12, 2027. Fans who prefer watching from home will have access to the film on the streaming platform starting April 2, 2027, as the studio looks to establish a lasting presence in the fantasy adaptation space.
