Dell Pro Max 18 Plus Faces Imminent Threat to AI Laptop Crown

The Dell Pro Max 18 Plus currently holds the title of fastest AI laptop on the market, topping local performance charts ahead of every rival machine tested. Equipped with an RTX PRO 5000 graphics chip, the workstation reached 185.1 tokens per second on the Phi model, 140.5 tokens per second on Mistral, and 119.7 tokens per second on Llama 3 during UL Procyon tests. However, this performance lead faces an imminent challenge with the arrival of Nvidia's RTX Spark laptops, which are scheduled to go on sale starting October 16, 2026, following open preorders.

Nvidia's new platform introduces heavy competition across multiple major hardware manufacturers. Microsoft is set to field the Surface Laptop Ultra starting at $2,599, while Dell itself introduces the XPS 16 Creator Edition starting at $3,799.99. Additional launch partners include Asus, HP, Lenovo, and MSI, with Acer and Gigabyte expected to roll out models later. Nvidia rates the RTX Spark architecture at up to one petaflop of FP4 AI performance utilizing sparsity, featuring 6,144 CUDA cores and up to 128 GB of shared memory designed to run large language models locally with up to 120 billion parameters.

Despite the competitive pressure from Nvidia's upcoming hardware, the Dell Pro Max 18 Plus commands a steep price tag that has doubled over a 14-month period to nearly $18,600. The top-tier configuration packs an Intel Core Ultra 9 285HX processor with 24 cores, paired with 24 GB of GDDR7 memory on its RTX PRO 5000 GPU and a single 128 GB CAMM2 module running at 6,400 MT/s. While RTX Spark laptops boast larger shared memory to accommodate massive models, their memory bandwidth trails Dell's graphics memory at roughly 300 GB/s compared to Dell's 896 GB/s, leaving the ultimate performance crown up for debate.
