Automotive giant BYD has officially pulled the cover off its newest flagship electric sedan in China, positioning the vehicle as a direct challenger to high-end luxury models like the Lucid Air. Named the Great Han, the opulent four-door sedan delivers unprecedented range and charging capabilities while heavily undercutting established premium automakers on price.
Priced domestically at 235,900 yuan, which translates to roughly $35,200, the Great Han packs heavy technological artillery. The vehicle achieves an impressive 630 miles of range on China's CLTC test cycle, translating to approximately 508 miles on the stricter European WLTP standard. Beyond endurance, the sedan incorporates high-end features including rear-wheel steering, dual-chamber air suspension, an augmented-reality head-up display, and LiDAR-based autonomous driving systems.
Charging infrastructure bottlenecks also face a major disruption thanks to BYD's proprietary Flash Charge system. The Great Han can replenish its battery from 10% to 97% in a mere nine minutes, effectively setting a new benchmark for refueling convenience in the electric vehicle sector. While BYD has not yet confirmed formal export plans for the Great Han, the company continues to aggressively expand its global footprint, leaving open the possibility of an international rollout under its high-end Denza brand.
Legacy luxury manufacturers in Europe and beyond now face mounting pressure as Chinese automakers consistently deliver cutting-edge automotive technology and luxury finishes at rock-bottom price points. As consumer skepticism toward Chinese automotive brands steadily fades, vehicles like the Great Han threaten to disrupt market share in both domestic and international territories.
