TikTok permanently bans promotional account for upcoming Elon Musk documentary

TikTok has permanently shut down the official promotional account for Alex Gibney's upcoming documentary about Elon Musk, just days before the film's wider distribution. Bleecker Street, the distributor behind the project, received notice of the impending permanent suspension on a Friday afternoon. The platform has remained silent regarding requests for comment on the sudden takedown.

The suspension follows a previous round of friction between major social platforms and the film's marketing team. Last month, multiple networks including TikTok, Meta, X, and YouTube initially rejected paid advertisements for the documentary. While YouTube and Google quickly walked back the ad rejections by labeling them an administrative error, TikTok and X maintained their strict refusal to run promotional material for the movie.

This latest enforcement action represents a sharp escalation in content moderation surrounding the film. Ironically, one of the final posts published by the account before its termination explicitly warned users to watch the movie before it got suppressed. Although TikTok operates independently, billionaire investor Larry Ellison—who holds a stake in the app—makes a brief appearance in the documentary via a surfaced text message discussing funding for Musk's acquisition of Twitter.
