TikTok has permanently suspended the promotional account for the feature-length documentary Musk, a nearly four-hour film that offers an unflattering look at the billionaire entrepreneur. The film's producers were informed that the action stemmed from the severity of alleged political-policy violations, with platform representatives noting that certain infractions trigger an immediate ban.

The suspension follows a broader pattern of advertising friction across major platforms. Late last month, several social media companies initially blocked promoters of the documentary from running ads. While Google, YouTube, and Meta subsequently reversed those decisions, TikTok maintained its restrictive stance. Meanwhile, X—a division of SpaceX—not only disallowed ads for the film but also reportedly refused to engage with distributor Bleecker Street or accept advertising for any upcoming titles on their calendar.

Despite the platform's active enforcement, the exact nature of the rule violation remains unclear. TikTok's stated civic and election integrity guidelines typically target accounts belonging to governments, politicians, and political parties rather than commercial artistic works. The banned account had reportedly shared promotional material, including content highlighting the film's lengthy intermission. Representatives for TikTok have not publicly detailed which specific guidelines were breached.

Complicating the narrative further are notable industry connections surrounding the project. Oracle, whose co-founder Larry Ellison maintains known ties to Musk, holds a fifteen percent stake in TikTok's U.S. operations. Additionally, Ellison's son David serves as the chairman and CEO of the company that owns HBO, which secured distribution rights for the documentary back in 2023. Despite these corporate overlaps, the film is still expected to air on HBO as originally scheduled following its nationwide release.
