Mike Flanagan Outlines Faithful Five-Season Plan for The Dark Tower

Director Mike Flanagan is plotting a remarkably faithful adaptation of Stephen King’s epic book series, The Dark Tower. Speaking during a recent episode of the Process Unlocked series, Flanagan revealed his strategy for bringing the massive fantasy saga to television and film, noting that the primary approach is simply to follow the source material in order. Rather than overcomplicating the narrative with heavy re-imaginings, the plan involves a sprawling five-season television run complemented by two standalone feature films.

Adapting King's dense worldbuilding is a daunting endeavor, a reality highlighted by the mixed reception of Nikolaj Arcel’s 2017 film adaptation, which took significant creative liberties. Flanagan acknowledged the temptation to remix source material, yet he emphasized that The Dark Tower demands restraint. By anchoring the adaptation around the iconic opening line and the stark dynamic of two characters in a desert, the production hopes to preserve the minimalist genius of King's original vision. Minor adjustments aside, Flanagan believes the legendary author already completed the heaviest lifting by establishing such a clear starting objective.

Before cameras can roll on the ambitious fantasy project, however, fans must wait for Flanagan to clear an intensely crowded production schedule. The filmmaker is currently managing multiple high-profile commitments, including a Carrie series, The Exorcist: Martyrs arriving in theaters next year, and supporting Henry Cavill on the Warhammer 40K adaptation for Prime Video. Production timelines and formal network greenlights remain dependent on when these conflicting schedules finally open up.
