Long before Patrick Stewart reprised his legendary role in Star Trek: Picard, Scottish actor James McAvoy attempted to secure a project that would have put him in the captain's chair. Appearing on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, McAvoy explained that his positive experience playing a younger version of Stewart in the X-Men film franchise inspired him to approach the teams behind Star Trek with a bold pitch.
The proposed project was envisioned as a one-off standalone television season tentatively titled Mutiny on the Stargazer. The narrative would have centered on Picard during his tenure as captain of the Federation vessel, a command he held for more than twenty years. According to McAvoy, the story aimed to explore the untold events of that era and dive deeply into a secret the character reportedly carried throughout his entire career.
Franchise executives initially entertained the concept, leading to multiple substantive discussions before logistical hurdles ultimately halted development. While the pitch never materialized into a working production, the actor remains open to exploring further opportunities to step into roles originally defined by Patrick Stewart, leaving fans to wonder what might have been for the storied sci-fi universe.
