Fans of the iconic spandex-clad heroes are getting a rare look at what could have been. Artist Samuel Rafa Garcia recently shared concept art on social media for a scrapped Power Rangers television project, offering a glimpse into a cancelled iteration of the franchise that was reportedly targeted for Netflix before falling through earlier this year. The newly revealed illustrations showcase fresh suit designs, distinct helmet styling, and an eye-catching morphing sequence that literalized the franchise's traditional lightning bolt motif by wrapping the heroes in crackling electricity during their transformation.
The visual direction of these discarded designs pulls heavy inspiration from both the classic Mighty Morphin era and the 2017 feature film. The suits feature familiar white diamond patterns alongside modernized armor plating, while the helmets bear a strong resemblance to classic designs minus traditional metallic accents. Beyond the aesthetics, the most striking departure lies in the core roster composition. Rather than utilizing the traditional trio of Red, Blue, and Yellow, this iteration opted for a leaner three-person squad consisting exclusively of Red, Green, and Blue.
While Netflix never officially brought the project to fruition, Garcia's portfolio links the work to studio 9B Collective, a production house with previous credits on streaming features like Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie. Disney's decision to pass on a reboot in August leaves the teen superheroes off screen for the foreseeable future. However, these digital paintings provide a fascinating window into a parallel development timeline that ultimately remains on the cutting room floor.
