Elon Musk offered a surprisingly candid assessment of his high-profile stint leading the Department of Government Efficiency during the debut episode of biographer Walter Isaacson's new podcast, Builders. Reflecting on the tumultuous period, Musk acknowledged that his involvement simply lasted longer than it should have.

The Department of Government Efficiency was established in January 2025 and dissolved shortly after Musk's departure in May. While the initiative claimed to secure $215 billion in savings through spending cuts, critics and subsequent reports highlighted heavy financial fallout, pointing to $135 billion in associated costs from taxpayer-funded firings, benefit disruptions, and administrative expenses in 2025 alone. Research published in scientific journals like Nature and The Lancet also raised severe alarms regarding the humanitarian toll of sweeping USAID reductions tied to the department's agenda.

Prompted by Isaacson during the podcast interview, Musk addressed whether the high-stakes political environment proved overly distracting or misbegotten. While defending his initial economic motivations—citing a desire to champion free-market principles and curb bureaucratic red tape—the billionaire entrepreneur conceded that his operational approach missed the mark.

Musk admitted that the allure of the Oval Office proved somewhat seductive, describing the experience of witnessing major policy decisions firsthand as inherently fascinating. However, looking back, he noted that his presence should have remained firmly behind the scenes, lasting no longer than a month or two rather than extending into a prolonged crusade.

When Isaacson suggested that the tech executive became intoxicated by the sweeping political overhaul symbolized by dramatic cuts and heavy-handed tactics, Musk offered little pushback. Summing up his time in Washington D.C., he bluntly copped to the assessment, stating simply that he got carried away.
