Minisforum has expanded its hardware lineup with the launch of the S5, a fanless network-attached storage system tailored for environments requiring fast shared storage without the mechanical noise of traditional hard drives. Built around a passively cooled design that uses heat pipes and cooling fins instead of conventional fans, the unit operates entirely silently. At its heart lies an Intel Core 3 304 processor featuring five cores and boost speeds reaching up to 4.3 GHz, paired with an integrated NPU rated at 15 TOPS for INT8 operations to support local artificial intelligence workloads.

The system's storage architecture relies on five M.2 NVMe slots capable of accommodating up to 40TB of total solid-state storage. Minisforum claims the configuration delivers sequential read speeds up to six times faster than standard hard disk drives, alongside random reads up to 100 times faster, though actual performance varies based on chosen drives and workloads. Networking capabilities include a 10GbE port, a 2.5GbE port, Wi-Fi, and dual 40Gbps USB4 interfaces, allowing the unit to handle high-speed data transfers across multiple simultaneous users.

Pricing strategies for the S5 offer distinct avenues for cost savings depending on how buyers acquire their storage drives. The bare-bones configuration is listed at $599, which includes 12GB of LPDDR5x memory and 128GB of UFS storage while leaving the five NVMe slots empty for user-supplied drives. Market comparisons show that purchasing individual third-party 4TB SSDs, such as Silicon Power UD90 drives, can total significantly less than Minisforum's preconfigured 20TB model, yielding hundreds of dollars in potential savings for savvy builders willing to assemble the hardware themselves.
