Paramount+ and Legendary Television are breathing new life into a classic property. A fresh adaptation of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea is currently in development, with Star Wars veteran Daisy Ridley attached to lead the cast. The project reimagines Irwin Allen's iconic 1960s television series and 1961 feature film for a contemporary streaming audience.
Behind the camera, the series brings together notable genre talent. Akiva Goldsman, known for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, has been tapped to write the script. Meanwhile, Matt Shakman, whose credits include WandaVision and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, is slated to direct.
The narrative centers on a brilliant ocean scientist named Lee Crane, played by Ridley. After a disastrous Arctic expedition results in the death of her twin sister, Crane finds herself recruited into a secretive government initiative centered on an anomalous, retro-futuristic submarine known as the USS Seaview. Recovered from the ice and bearing inexplicable historical symbols, the vessel responds exclusively to Crane's presence, thrusting her into deep-sea missions to contain emerging threats and investigate the lost city of Atlantis.
While the project has generated considerable buzz among science fiction fans, production timelines and official release dates have not yet been finalized by Paramount+. Whether the ambitious deep-sea adventure secures a full series order remains to be seen as development continues.
