The neon-drenched dystopia of Night City is back on Netflix with the premiere of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. Following the massive success of the 2023 anime adaptation from CD Projekt RED and studio Trigger, the ten-episode follow-up drops a brand-new ensemble of would-be edgerunners into the year 2078. While the first season established a standalone narrative, creators always envisioned further exploration of the edgerunner lifestyle provided the right creative elements aligned.

According to CD Projekt RED vice president of franchise and showrunner Bartosz Sztybor, the core directive for the sequel was simple: avoid looking like season one. While the original run captured a romanticized, Michael Bay-style vision of a young merc packing chrome to achieve glory, the new chapter acts as a narrative mirror. It follows a former high-profile merc who loses all his implants and must start over from the ground up, leaning into a brutally unglamorous perspective.

Director Kai Ikarashi steered the visual direction toward an explicit homage to 1980s and 1990s anime and classic cinema. Influenced by films like Pulp Fiction, Léon: The Professional, and City of God, the creative team deliberately crafted louder, bolder silhouettes and a distinct visual edge. The opening sequence sets the tone by swapping Franz Ferdinand for The Cure's track '10:15 Saturday Night,' anchoring the gritty new descent into Night City.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is streaming now on Netflix, inviting viewers back into a starkly different corner of the cyberpunk universe where the glamor of the merc lifestyle is thoroughly stripped away.
