Modern artificial intelligence models possess advanced coding capabilities that create an urgent dilemma for digital security. While these systems help defenders secure critical infrastructure, they simultaneously hand malicious hackers powerful tools to exploit legacy systems. Recent events highlighted this tension when the company behind PHP issued emergency patches for two major vulnerabilities collectively known as PHP2Shell. These critical flaws, capable of letting attackers seize control of web servers, were discovered using OpenAI models. Following these disclosures, OpenAI announced a new framework designed to foster global cooperation in finding and fixing hidden vulnerabilities buried deep within aging software.

Dubbed Patch the Planet, the initiative seeks to translate discoveries into robust protections and build a response capable of scaling alongside advancing AI capabilities. OpenAI is inviting independent cybersecurity professionals to review the approach, challenge underlying assumptions, and identify potential blind spots. This crowdsourced defense strategy comes paired with a $1 billion funding commitment. The company plans to subsidize access to its Daybreak cybersecurity auditing platform specifically for resource-constrained organizations protecting essential public services.

Many critical sectors still rely heavily on decades-old programming languages like COBOL and Fortran, creating massive targets for sophisticated attackers. OpenAI recently noted that its newest models have demonstrated substantial improvements in translating these legacy codebases into modern languages. By offering tools like specialized GitHub skills to check for PHP2Shell compromises alongside public disclosure platforms, the company aims to position itself as a frontline defender against the very security crisis that modern generative technology accelerates.
