Microsoft Sets Hourly Rates for Xbox Cloud Gaming Service

Microsoft is restructuring its Xbox Cloud Gaming service by introducing monthly hour limits and additional pay-per-hour costs for users. When the cloud platform originally launched in 2020, subscribers were promised free and unlimited streaming access. However, starting in November, those terms are changing significantly across the board.

Under the new tiered structure, Game Pass Ultimate subscribers paying $23 a month receive 15 hours of streaming time. Those on the $15 Game Pass Premium tier get 10 hours, while the $10 Game Pass Essential tier receives 5 hours. Once users exhaust their monthly allotment of hours, additional time must be purchased separately. Introductory pricing for extra hours is currently being tested with Xbox Insiders who lack an active subscription, offering packages such as 10 hours for $3.99, 25 hours for $7.99, and 50 hours for $11.99.

Crucially, this hourly monetization model applies to both titles within the Game Pass library and separate games purchased individually through the Xbox Store. Players who rely on cloud streaming because their local hardware lacks the necessary specifications will now face continuous hourly charges once their monthly allocation runs out. This shift marks a major departure from previous accessibility standards in cloud gaming, pointing to a broader trend of increased costs across digital platforms.
